Shell Lubricants, Sinopec Lubricants and other globally recognized lubricants recently featured in latest report on industrial greases market – industry size, share, segments analysis and global forecast to 2014-2020 scrutinized in new research done by persistence market research.
Grease is a type of semisolid lubricant that has broad applications in different industries. Some of the factors to be considered while selecting industrial grease are water temperature, operating temperature, viscosity and consistency among others. Industrial grease consists of base oil, performance additives and a thickener that helps to retain oil in a semisolid state.
Majority of thickeners are soaps, which include lithium stearate, sodium stearate and calcium stearate. In some instances, non-soap thickeners such as modified clay or fine silica, can be used. Soaps are effective emulsifying agents and the selection of soaps is determined by the type of application. The soap influences the water resistance, temperature resistance and chemical stability of grease. Industrial greases are often applied using a grease gun which applies grease to the part that is being lubricated under pressure.
The performance additives include graphite, molybdenum disulphide and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) among others, which enhance the lubricating properites of the grease. Copper is also be added to grease that is used for high pressure applications and to prevent corrosion later in service life.

Industrial grease has been significantly used in the automotive, construction, mining and chemical industries. Grease is important for lubricating those surfaces where lubricating oil is not applicable. They can be classified as: food grade greases, synthetic greases, complex greases, general equipment and machinery greases, high temperature greases, complex greases, graphited greases, chain grease and cement plant greases. Food grade greases are those greases which come in contact with food. Synthetic greases provide protection against corrosion, rust and water washout. Complex greases have high temperature resistance and are commonly usable up to 180ºC.
There has been an increase in the production of complex greases due to an increase in global fast food restaurants which use complex grease for packaging of food. Graphited greases have high water resistance and good sealing properties. Chain Grease helps to properly lube a bicycle chain or a motor chain. Cement Plant Greases are used extensively by the cement industry to provide lubrication to cement gearboxes. General Equipment and Machinery Greases can be used for wheel bearings, chassis fittings and universal joints, water pumps and mobile equipment such as construction equipment and tractors. High temperature greases have a wide temperature range and are applicable for centralized lubrication systems of massive industrial units
The industrial grease market is driven by industrialization, implementation of new mining and power projects and booming construction and automotive industry. Rapid economic growth, improved infrastructure and a rising middle class in emerging economies has lead to increase in vehicle production and sales that in turn increases the demand for industrial greases.
Asia Pacific is currently the fastest growing market for industrial greases. Japan, China and India are the key markets in this region. The market in Europe is expected to witness slow to moderate growth as compared to the historic growth experienced by the region. The region is slowly recovering its market share with Spain, Turkey, France and Germany being the important markets. Latin America and North Africa is likely to experience substantial growth due to increase in industrialization and rapid economic development. Brazil is expected to account for significant demand in Latin America during the forecast period.
Some of the key players in this market include Shell, Axel Christiernsson, Castrol, Dow Corning, Exxon Mobil, FUCHS, Total, Chemtool, Inc., Texaco and Sinopec Lubricant Company among others.
