Sodium Hydroxide has a chemical formula as (NaOH) is commonly known as Caustic Soda or Lye with a molecular weight of 39.9971 g/ mol. It comes in a white solid when it is at its pure state, it can also be transformed into pellets, flakes, granules, and also 50% saturated solution. It readily absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere due to its deliquescent nature, so, therefore, it should be stored in an airtight container, so it doesn’t absorb moisture from the air. It is very soluble in water which liberates substantial heat, which may be sufficient to ignite combustible materials.
This Caustic soda is widely used in various industries, because its a strong chemical base, it is preferred in the manufacture of pulp and paper, drinking water, textiles and also detergents. It is also used in processing cotton fabric, laundering, and bleaching, metal cleaning, and processing, oxide coating, and electroplating. Sodium hydroxide is mostly present in liquid drain openers.
Uses of Sodium Hydroxide Micropearls
Sodium hydroxide is often used in analytical chemistry; Its solutions are often used to measure the concentration of acids by titration. Since sodium hydroxide is not a primary standard, solutions must first be standardized by titration against another standard such as KHP(Potassium Hydrogen Phthalate). Burettes exposed to sodium hydroxide should be rinsed out immediately after use, to avoid it from “freezing” of the stopcock.
