FERROUS SULFATE is a greenish or yellow-brown crystalline solid. Density 15.0 lb /gal. Melts at 64°C and loses the seven waters of hydration at 90°C. The primary hazard is the threat to the environment. Immediate steps should be taken to limit its spread to the environment. Used for water or sewage treatment, as a fertilizer ingredient.

Ferrous sulfate is also known as Green vitriol. It is of synthetic origin and belongs to the pharmacological groups called _hematological agents_ and _iron salts_. The molecular weight of ferrous sulfate is 278.00 [L2235]. This medication is an iron supplement used to treat or prevent low blood levels of iron (e.g., for anemia or during pregnancy) [L2246]. Twice the number of ferrous gluconate or ferrous fumarate tablets (other forms of iron for ingestion) are required to provide the amount of elemental iron in ferrous sulfate tablets [L2241]. For this reason, ferrous sulfate is the gold standard (most commonly prescribed) oral iron therapy in the UK and many other countries. Interestingly, research has demonstrated that unabsorbed dietary iron may possibly increase free radical production in the colon to concentrations that could lead to mucosal cell damage or increased production of carcinogens
