Start with the process—not the phrase “food-grade epoxy”

A coating is not automatically suitable because it is seamless or described as “food grade.” The project team should define the facility zone, contamination risk, cleaning chemicals, wash-down temperature, drainage, slip risk, traffic, coving, maintenance access and documentary requirements. Product suitability and compliance must be supported by current manufacturer documentation and the facility’s approved specification.

Epoxy, polyurethane and resin-mortar options

The correct build-up depends on the operating duty. A thin epoxy coating may be considered for suitable dry, light-duty areas; self-smoothing epoxy can provide a seamless finish on a correctly prepared substrate; broadcast systems can add texture and build; resin mortar can support repairs or heavier duty; and compatible polyurethane or other topcoats may be considered where their documented properties match the exposure. Names alone do not establish performance.

  • Self-smoothing epoxy: useful where a seamless, level and cleanable finish is required on an assessed substrate.
  • Broadcast epoxy: aggregate is incorporated for build or texture, followed by compatible seal coats.
  • Resin mortar: considered for repairs, falls, coves and selected heavy-duty details.
  • Chemical-resistant system: selected against the exact chemical, concentration, temperature and contact time.
  • Anti-static/ESD system: specified only where electrical-performance requirements and testing are defined.

Substrate, moisture and hygienic detailing

Clean-room expectations do not correct a weak or wet slab. Does seamless epoxy automatically make a room hygienic?

No. Hygiene also depends on coves, drains, joints, penetrations, cleaning access, defects, maintenance and the facility’s procedures.

Can a non-slip floor still be easy to clean?

Texture must balance traction and cleanability. Use the actual wet/dry conditions, footwear, contaminants, drainage and cleaning method to approve a sample or mock-up.
