What Are Industrial Lubricants Used For?
Industrial lubricants reduce friction, control wear, transfer power, remove heat, prevent rust, seal clearances and carry contaminants to filtration. The correct oil or grease depends on the machine, viscosity, load, speed, temperature, environment and manufacturer specification.

- Reduce friction: a lubricant film separates moving surfaces.

How viscosity affects equipment
Viscosity is the lubricant resistance to flow. The oil must be fluid enough to circulate and reach the component, yet viscous enough to maintain a protective film at operating temperature. Machine design, speed, load, temperature and clearance determine the required grade. Use the OEM manual and product data rather than selecting by appearance.

Grease
Grease holds lubricant at the application point. It suits many bearings, pins, bushes, joints and exposed points where oil retention is difficult.
Grease selection includes thickener, NLGI grade, base oil viscosity, load, speed, temperature, water resistance and compatibility. Grease colour alone is not a specification.

Why industrial lubricants fail in service
Many lubricant problems are contamination or maintenance problems. Water, dust, mixed products, poor breathers, wrong containers, blocked filters, leaks and overheating can shorten oil life. Oil analysis should be interpreted with operating data and inspections, not used as a stand alone decision.
Can hydraulic oil be used in a gearbox?Only if the equipment manufacturer specifies it. Hydraulic and gear oils are designed around different operating requirements and additive systems.
Does darker oil always mean it has failed?No. Colour can change for several reasons. Use analysis, operating history and the product condition limits to make the decision.
